Plex alternative

A Plex alternative for people who want to understand their server.

Finetic is a self-hosted media server for movies and television stored on hardware you control. It combines a polished household interface with explicit playback evidence, scoped guest access and operational tools inside the same product.

How Finetic approaches it

Designed as a system, experienced as a product.

The technical depth remains available without turning the normal viewing experience into a server dashboard.

02

Where Plex remains stronger today

Plex has a mature catalogue of public clients across television, mobile, desktop and console platforms, plus long-established remote-access workflows. Finetic’s responsive web client is primary; Fire TV and Android clients are still in physical-device testing and are not public store releases.

03

Remote access without pretending networking disappears

Finetic supports HTTPS publishing and bounded guest playback, and its remote-access assistant tests DNS, certificates, byte ranges, HLS, WebSockets and guest routes. It does not currently provide a vendor traffic relay or automatically configure a router, hostname or certificate.

04

A local-first subscription boundary

Media, users, progress, history and server analytics remain on the installation. A signed renewable lease enforces the subscription while allowing bounded offline operation; expiry blocks new playback but leaves administration, renewal, backup, restore, export and diagnostics available. Exact commercial terms remain provisional until paid launch.

05

Evaluate both against your own library

Finetic can be deployed beside Plex with the same media mounted read-only. Compare cold starts, seeking, subtitle handling, hardware use, client availability and household usability using the files and devices that actually matter in your home.

Product evidence

Compare the experience you will actually use.

Title details, playback actions and technical evidence coexist without turning every household screen into an administration page.
